The Exit FAQ

  • The right time for an exit depends on several factors, but two are especially crucial: 3 months runway and an emotionally stable co-founder:

    1. Business Performance

    • Growth Plateau: If growth has stalled and scaling requires significant external investment or expertise, it may be time to explore exit options.

    • Profitability: If your business is consistently profitable, an exit could lock in value before market conditions change.

    2. Personal Goals

    • Achieving Financial Goals: If you’ve reached your financial target or secured your future, it may be the right time to exit.

    • Burnout or Loss of Passion: If you’re no longer passionate or feeling burnt out, it could be time to move on.

    3. Market Conditions

    • Favorable Market Trends: A strong market (e.g., high demand, favorable interest rates) makes an exit more appealing.

    • Economic Uncertainty: If the market is volatile, waiting for better conditions might lead to a higher exit value.

    4. External Factors

    • Regulatory Changes: Potential new laws or regulations could affect your business, making an exit a prudent choice.

    • Industry Disruption: If your industry is being disrupted, exiting while your company still holds value may be wise.

    5. Financial Stability

    • Runway & Cash Flow: Ensure your business has at least 3 months of financial runway to sustain the exit process. If cash flow is tight, securing short-term financing may be necessary before moving forward.

    6. Emotional Readiness

    • Co-Founder Readiness: Having an emotionally stable co-founder is key. Both of you need to be mentally prepared for the transition to handle the stress and complexity of the exit process.

    7. Investment Return

    • Targeted ROI: If you’ve met your financial or investment goals, it might be time to sell or exit to maximize returns.

    8. Succession Planning

    • Leadership Transition: If you’re planning to retire or step down, an exit strategy ensures a smooth transition for the business.

    9. Strategic Opportunities

    • Mergers or Acquisition Offers: If a competitor or investor approaches with an attractive offer, it could be the right time to exit.

      In Summary, with 3 months runway and a stable co-founder, if your business is in a good position to be sold and you’re mentally prepared, it could be the right time to exit.
